the staple crops project

On the menu in 2008: quinoa, tempeh & greens cooked w/ sunflower oil
|
Fresh fruits, veggies and herbs are vital, but don't constitute a complete diet. Grains, protein, and fats are also essential.
In the interest of providing such, two acres have been leased for 2008 in Carver, about 15 miles from SE. Accessible by bike & bus, this plot will be filled with quinoa, soy (for tempeh!), oilseed sunflowers, dry beans, soup peas, oats, lentils, flax and more. Potential harvests are in the hundreds of pounds per crop.
How much quinoa do we get from ½ an acre? How many gallons of oil from sunflower seeds? We'll be harvesting not just food, but also data for future grows. Such information is of immense value in this, the Peak Oil era.

Based on prior experience and fresh research, I have put together a budget for this project of $2500 for the year. A substantial amount of labor will also be required.
To attract both monetary and sweat equity, the harvest will be divided among participants in proportion to how much they invest.
That is: the more you put in, the more you get out.
I will have a trailer and tents for folks who come by, and good tools and gloves. As each harvest comes in, we'll process and divvy it up. Someone will take to the idea of making tempeh, someone else to oil-pressing or quinoa threshing. I'll cook. We'll enjoy ourselves while we learn how to feed ourselves.
